Bridging Dreams and Technology: AI at Chino High
The intersection of education and technology was vividly highlighted on March 18 at Chino High School, where students from the Biomedical Science and Technology (BST) Academy took the lead in organizing an educational forum centered on artificial intelligence (AI) in education. This was the second consecutive year for the forum, underscoring the students' commitment to exploring how emerging technologies can enhance learning experiences.
Students from the BST Academy have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in traditional courses while also focusing on high-demand fields such as cybersecurity and biomedical sciences with an emphasis on AI. They successfully invited experts from prestigious institutions like Caltech and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as representatives from the California Department of Education, to share their insight on AI.
Empowering Future Leaders Through Engagement
Cindy Palacios, the assistant principal overseeing the BST Academy, expressed pride in the students' initiative. They demonstrated remarkable adaptability by arranging virtual meetings with speakers and actively engaging with their expertise. This proactive approach not only enriches their educational experience but also nurtures a sense of ownership in their learning journey.
As technology continues to evolve, the BST Academy is planning to introduce two new courses in the upcoming 2025-26 school year, including one that focuses specifically on the impact of AI in the medical field—an exciting opportunity for students to learn how technology intertwines with healthcare.
Community and Collaboration: A Bright Future Ahead
The event received strong encouragement from local school board members, with Jon Monroe highlighting the impressive capabilities of the students. As discussions about AI’s role in education progress, he noted the responsible integration of this technology into school curricula, acknowledging both its benefits and its potential ethical dilemmas.
“Every great discovery that moves us forward can also have very detrimental uses,” Monroe stated, emphasizing the need for a carefully balanced approach as educational institutions work to prepare students for a future where AI plays a key role.
An Invitation to Innovate
The continued engagement of students at Chino High School will likely pave the way for innovative curriculum changes that address both the potentials and challenges of AI in education. This proactive initiative serves as a reminder for educators and students alike to think critically about how they can act as catalysts for positive change in their learning environments.
